Day 21 We’re still on track: the railway track.

As I reported yesterday, the weather today would not be favorable for cycling 90 kilometers. After much debate, we decided to do this particular route mainly by train. It’s a bit sad as we would have biked past Rømø, a peninsula where we stayed many years ago with the kids, and also missed a meet and greet with the statue “Mennesket ved havet” in Esbjerg that always reminded me of my own family name.

So instead of showing some pictures from this year, I’ll show you some of the ones we took 16 years ago.

But back to the the order of the day.

After saying our goodbyes to Melanie and putting our bags on our bikes, we left for Tønder train station.

Now, A little quiz to spice things up.

As we left the lovely tiny house at Pilegården, it was:

  1. Sunny
  2. Sunny with clouds
  3. Cloudy but warm
  4. Damn cold and raining all, the time

If you answered 4, you were correct, although the rain stopped for a while when we biked through Tønder.

Tønder is a typical Danish town with a pedestrian shopping street and many lovely houses, some many years old. On the town square you often find a statue or a fountain, but here we found something special: Kagmanden. It’s a replica of a person from 1699. It represents a Profos, a soldier responsible for the execution of minor punishments.

When we arrived at the small Tønder train station, it took us a bit of searching and fumbling to order the right ticket, but eventually we were ready.

After stepping on the wrong train (“For Esbjerg, you better take the train in the other direction!”), we finally got on the right one.

The train runs on a single track and the engine still uses diesel, which is a bit strange for a country that gets almost all its electricity from wind and sun.

We were lucky to have a spot for our bikes and we could sit and eat our lunch. It was an enjoyable journey.

After the transfer in Esbjerg, our train journey continued to Varde, our final destination.

When we arrived there, it was:

  1. Sunny
  2. Sunny with clouds
  3. Cloudy but warm
  4. Damn cold and raining all, the time

Yes, you are right! At least if you selected option 2, sunny with clouds. We still had to do some 9 kilometers on the bike to the Airbnb we rented for the coming three nights.

Yes, you heard right, three nights.

We are heavily practicing our resting behavior 😁. Yet, tomorrow we will pay a visit to Varde, and Kati, our host, mentioned something about a lake in the vicinity. But hey, you can rest there too, no?

Sunny with clouds and a perfect road to bike. What more could you ask for?
