Day 16 What is happening to the strahlstrøm?

The weather feels “strange” these days. Prolonged periods of wet, cool, or warm weather make it difficult to follow or predict because the jet stream is currently weak and highly meandering. Thanks to Armand Pien and Frank Deboosere, we know what a jet stream is, but apparently, this stream is then influenced by a little El Niño, who is returning now, and this return temporarily disrupts the atmosphere.

All this lecturing is to say that if I had to summarize our trip today, it’s something like: cold, rain, sun, much wind, and a lot of climbing meters at the end. You can imagine that the legs of yours truly and Leen now feel very much incapacitated. Luckily, I still have two active fingers to make this daily report.

We started with a one-hour and 15-minute delay from our lovely tiny house in Mordiek near Horst. The rain was a bit too enthusiastic, and we did not want to be completely wet from the first minute of our trip.

At 11, the sun was shining again, but the air was cold. Just for your information, I am someone who feels the cold easily, but even Leen wore more clothes than usual.

Around noon, we decided to eat Wiener Schnitzel at least once before leaving Germany, so we stopped at “Karin’s Futterkrippe,” which is more like a “frituur” with extras. By the way, a Futterkrippe is something like a food trough, so I’m starting to doubt Karin’s marketing skills a bit.

I must say that the weather was okay in the afternoon. The sun was present; the rain played a bit with us but could never convince us anymore. However, there was a lot of wind and the temperature was way too low for the time of year.

But what really bit into our calves were the hills and even a huge bridge that we had to overcome.

Yours truly does his best to keep smiling along the way. And why do you never see a steep hill when it is recorded?
We even had to climb this huge Grünentaler Hochbrücke, but Leen always does this with a smile.

Oops, my bad! I messed up the planning a little, just proving I’m human, and our route ended up being almost 15 kilometers shorter than we thought. So, two happy bikers, because our energy was already super low.

When we reached our destination, Nordhastedt, we quickly jumped into the local Edeka to replenish some of our stock. Then we checked into the Airbnb we reserved. Apparently, it is run by a Belgian woman who moved here and is married to a German gentleman who speaks impeccable Dutch. The house has so much character and is filled with paintings and statues of all kinds.

I bet we’ll have lovely dreams here.
