We think a new tent needs a dry run, so we’re pitching it today and sleeping in it tonight, from April 30th to May 1st.
Our neighbor Inge was super nice and let us camp in her garden next to our own house.
It took us over an hour to set up, and we were really impressed with the Nordisk Oppland 3 LW. It’s a three-person tent made of lightweight material, weighing only 2080 grams, which makes it perfect for bike packing.
We also wanted to test our sleeping mats (Nemo Tensor Trail) and our sleeping bags. Leen chose a sleeping bag from Nordisk and Jan went for the Therm-a-rest boost 650 regular.
Around 10:30 PM we went to the house next door and slid into our sleeping bags, tired but satisfied.
The night was a bit rough. As the temperature dropped to 7 degrees celsius (and maybe a bit colder at ground level). We felt underdressed in our sleeping bags as we only wore light pajamas. During the night Leen added a warm sweater, but felt still too cold afterwards.
So, even with good mats and sleeping bags, we still need to adjust our sleepwear. If you’re dressed too lightly and have to pee at night, you’ll get totally hypothermic and have trouble warming up again.
Even though it wasn’t a great night for us, we learned enough to be ready for another cold night.
The next day we tried to get everything back in their little bags and guess what? No problems here, and the sun of the first of May could bring the temperature of our bones back to normal levels.
