Day 82 Cows on the beach

Today we proceeded along ths Sudostleden, but not after cleaning the tiny house where we stayed for the past two days.

Next time, we need to be more careful when booking a house. The cleaning often takes at least 30 to 45 minutes, and Leen has high-quality standards that she won’t compromise on (and I admire her for that).

So at 10:30 we said goodbye to our host Ann-Katrin and 4 minutes later we were biking towards Ystad.

Our first stop was Simrishamn a lovely Swedish harbour town. Lot’s of charming houses and streets. An impressive church dedicated to Saint Nicolai.

With its relation to the sea, we were not surprised that it contained even two ships, donated by the sailors.

Even the harbor’s charming. Bottom line, we totally recommend Simrishamn if you’re in the neighborhood.

As we cycled a little further, we met our cow on the beach. This is quite characteristic of countries with extensive coastal areas, where life extends right to the water’s edge.

A bit further we stumbled over an archeological site: The Horsahallen rock-carving area. There are several rock carvings in the area.

The figures are among the oldest in the Nordic countries. They were hewn into the rock during the early Bronze Age, some 3.500 years ago. The images consist of 50 axes, 45 ships, animals, a horse among them, men with phalluses bearing axes, and cup marks. The axes depict real bronze axes, of the kind used for ceremonial purposes.

We took our lunch in Skillinge near the seaside.

After that, the route today was very varied with lovely landscapes and nice roads.

We arrived at the campsite at ten minutes to five, and we will be staying there tomorrow as well. It is a lovely campsite, located three kilometers from the beach and 8 kilometers from Ystad. We took our time to select the “perfect camp spot” (it should be shady during the day and sunny in the morning to get dry quickly).

We made a vegetarian meal in the camping’s kitchen, and after we took a shower. The showers were complete bath rooms! So much space and luxury you don’t see often in a camping.

we returned to the kitchen, as there was also a cozy corner with a radio, TV and board games.

There we had a delightful conversation with Asbjørn, who was on a cycling journey from the Northern Cape, traveling through Sweden, and was now making his way back to Norway.

We retired for the evening at eleven o’clock, feeling quite tired. We were finally able to utilize our lights, as the sun had already set at 20:40. We are hopeful for a restful night’s sleep.

Tomorrow we stay at this camping and visit Ystad by bike.
