No way we’re starting our trip unprepared. We still have a bunch of stuff to test: our new bikes, the tent, sleeping bags… Today, we finally did our first cooking test: pancakes on our Trangia set. We also made coffee and pancake batter. I wanted to see how much gas a cooking session like that would use, and I also wanted to use as many of the cooking utensils we’re bringing as possible, just to make sure we packed everything we might need.
So, our conclusions:
- Making coffee: Check! Just boil water with the ground coffee and filter it when pouring it into our cups.
- Making batter: Check! At least when you start with a pancake mix and just need to add oil and milk
- Banking pancakes: Check! I was a bit scared that frying pancakes in an aluminum pan would lead to burnt failures, but it all went fine. Just be patient and heat the oil to the max before adding the batter, and play with the fire’s intensity to prevent the pancakes from burning.
- Gas usage: Check! We used 56g of gas in a 45 minute cooking session, leaving 174g for later.
Next test will need to be a bit more complicated, we still need to choose what.
